Who in the Lord confide
Have never cause to fear:
For God is ever by their side,
To comfort and to cheer.
What profit canst thou gain
By self-consuming grief?
Thy sighs and tears will all be vain –
They cannot bring relief.
Put thou in God thy trust,
And patiently be still:
The Lord Himself protects the just,
But sovereign is His will.
We may approach His throne
With cares and griefs distressed:
But the time must be His own
To answer our request.
God heareth every cry
In every land and clime;
He never missed a tear or sigh,
Then let us wait His time.
Oh! Let us all be still,
And place in Him our trust:
And when He works His sovereign will,
Then shall we own it just.
